Hormonal Regulation & Menstrual Health

In TCM your menstrual cycle is one of the clearest reflections of our overall health. Irregular cycles, painful periods, or PMS aren't just "normal" things to push through. They're signals that the body's internal rhythms are out of sync. Acupuncture restores these natural rhythms by regulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis, improving blood flow to the reproductive organs, reducing inflammation and calming the nervous system, leading to smoother cycles with fewer symptoms around your period.

Main Symptoms & Conditions Treated

  • Painful periods

  • Irregular or absent periods

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding

  • Irregular bleeding between periods

  • PMS and PMDD

  • PCOS/PMOS

  • Endometriosis

  • Endometritis

  • Frequent UTIs

  • Perimenopause symptoms (hot flashes, sleep disruption, mood changes)

  • Hormonal acne

  • Hormonal Headaches

  • Stress-related cycle disruption

How Often to Come

Most patients start with weekly sessions for 8–12 weeks (roughly 2–3 menstrual cycles), since hormonal patterns shift gradually and take time to correct. Many patients begin to see changes to their symptoms within the first cycle of treatment. After initial progress it is typical to move to biweekly or monthly visits to keep symptoms managed long term.

Fertility & IVF, FET & IUI Support

Our fertility acupuncture focuses on optimizing the internal conditions for conception by improving blood flow to the uterus and ovaries, supporting egg quality, regulating ovulation, balancing hormones, and lowering the stress response that can interfere with reproductive function. When paired with IVF or IUI, acupuncture is also timed and customized to your treatments to provide additional support through stimulation, retrieval, transfer, and the two-week wait.

Main Symptoms & Conditions Treated

  • Unexplained infertility

  • Diminished ovarian reserve / egg quality concerns

  • Ovulatory disorders (including PCOS)

  • Recurrent implantation failure or pregnancy loss

  • Male-factor fertility support (sperm quality/motility)

  • IVF, FET, and IUI preparation

  • Pre and Post transfer support (before/after embryo transfer)

  • Stress and anxiety related to the fertility journey

How Often to Come

  • Pre-cycle preparation: weekly for 3 months prior to IVF/IUI when possible, to improve egg quality and hormonal balance ahead of treatment.

  • During an active IVF/IUI cycle: typically 1–2 sessions per week, with specific visits timed around stimulation monitoring, retrieval, and transfer (including same day transfer  treatments, when possible).

  • Visit our IVF page for more information on timing of treatments during specific cycles

  • Two-week wait: weekly support sessions to manage stress and support implantation.

Your Pregnancy Treatment Plan

In Chinese Medicine, regular nourishment of the "Zi Gong," or "baby palace" with a robust supply of qi and blood helps ensure a healthy, resilient baby. Specific dietary, herbal, and acupuncture recommendations are given to nourish and support your healthy baby palace throughout pregnancy. Every pregnancy is different, and we tailor your treatments to meet your specific health needs, because the health and well-being of your entire body matters when nourishing and nurturing a healthy pregnancy.

How Often to Come

  • First trimester: acupuncture can begin as early as pregnancy occurs, and weekly treatments are recommended to help support early hormone levels and nourish the body’s reserves of qi and blood in early development.

  • Second and third trimester: as needed depending on symptoms, at  least 1-2 times per month through week 36.

  • Week 36 onward: weekly treatments to maintain comfort and prepare the body for a healthy labor and delivery.

  • Postpartum: usually 2-4 treatments in the weeks following birth to promote healing and recovery.

Breech Baby Treatment

Chinese Medicine has used a safe, time-tested tool to support pregnancy and childbirth for thousands of years: moxibustion. This gentle form of heat therapy is applied at precise acupuncture points to encourage the fetus to naturally reposition into the ideal head-down position for childbirth. Many local OBGYNs and midwives refer patients to Flow Acupuncture for this service, with impressive results.

Breech treatment ideally begins around weeks 34 or 35 of pregnancy and typically requires 3–5 treatments for full repositioning. Mallory will walk you through the entire process, which is generally considered a gentle, safe, and effective way to correct breech presentation.

More than needles: our full toolkit

Acupuncture is our foundation. But a fertility journey deserves more than one tool which is why our Salt Lake City Acupuncture Cinic & Herbal Apothecary bring several modalities together under one roof.

  • Acupuncture

  • Moxibustion

  • Cupping and gua sha for pain and tension

  • Nutritional and lifestyle guidance

  • Mind body practices for stress and nervous system regulation

  • Personalized Herbal Medicine

Our Apothecary offers a wide range of hand crafted herbal formulas tailored to your specific pattern, adjusting it as your cycle and circumstances change. Not a supplement off a shelf. Medicine formulated for you, working quietly between visits, which is often exactly where the real progress happens.

Together, these approaches let us support you from multiple angles, with a plan built around your body, your cycle, and your timeline.

We work alongside your care team

Our practitioners bring specialized training in reproductive health, working alongside your OB/GYN or fertility clinic. We understand IVF and IUI medications and protocols, know how to time treatments around your medical care, and communicate clearly about what's happening in your cycle so you always understand the “why" behind your treatment plan.

What your first visit looks like

A real conversation. We'll take time and dive deep into your menstrual history, your fertility timeline, any diagnoses, medications, past pregnancies, sleep, stress, digestion, and daily life. Bring your cycle tracking apps, your labs or guidance from your fertility specialist if you have them.

A thorough assessment. We assess your patterns from both Western Medicine and the lense of traditional Chinese medicine, and take time to explain those patterns in terms that make sense to you.

Your first treatment. Gentle acupuncture in a quiet, calm room. Most people are surprised by how comfortable it is; many drift off entirely.

Your plan. Honest expectations, a personalized care plan including herbal formulas when appropriate, dietary and lifestyle recommendations that are sustainable for you, and further referrals or labs if needed.
